SIDETRACKED MAGAZINE
Story by Dom De Jesus
Words & Photography by Damien Schumann
From a vehicle, there’s not a lot to look at along the West Coast of South Africa. But we’re here on foot, stopped and hunkered down out of the midday heat, a few guys and girls wearing the vulnerable expression of love. You know the one: when you’re in on a secret far greater than you could ever imagine. One that locks a smile on your face while Armageddon thrashes out around you. Drivers call us crazy as they pass, but we’ll let them be for now...

RUNNER'S WORLD
Written by Ryan Scott
Photography by Damien Schumann
Saving Our Shores - Unchecked mining is damaging vast areas of delicate land on our West Coast. A group of runners have had enough - and they're using running to deliver their message. When runner and surfer Dom de Jesus saw this sad state of affairs, he resolved to introduce the running world to this precious jewel that was being destroyed. Creating an event in which entrants run from north to south, mostly within the high-water mark and right through the mining area, is his way of shining a light on both the beauty of the land and the transgressions being carried out on it.

GONE OUTDOOR

Dom The Runner. A Run West Story. With 250kms of the West Coast traversed on foot, Dom de Jesus is starting to speak. He’s a man of action who in his own words needed to do something in order to say something. This is a beautiful trait, to be able to observe that something is out of place and then step into the unknown until an answer becomes clear...

KEEPING IT WILD
Produced by Blake Dyason
In 2021 Dom de Jesus had a simple idea: to run the entire West Coast of South Africa to see firsthand the devastation that mining was having on the coastline. What he didn't know then was how bad the problem truly was and the extent of mining operations on the coast.
In this episode we run with Dom and we see how he has galvanized an entire community of passionate runners who are running with him all the way to Cape Point.
